Where are you from?
Enniscorthy, County Wexford, Ireland
How did you get started in broadcasting?
I studied a BA (Hons) Journalism in Preston when I first came to England (1993), from there I joined the Press Association as a London-based reporter. I spent a year with them and moved to Leeds to work for the Yorkshire Evening Post and from there joined ITV Meridian as a newsroom journalist. I was reporting within six months.
When was that?
PA in 1996, Yorkshire Evening Post in 1997-99, ITV Meridian 1999, Sky News 2005.
Why News broadcasting?
The buzz from reporting live on a big breaking news story is the best there is. It helps if you’re as nosey as I am too. Just tell the facts, keep it simple and above all else, get it right.
Where else would have viewers seen or heard you before?
Sky News, Sky News Ireland, ITV Meridian, ITV Central, the ITV News Channel, Radio 2UE in Sydney, 4BC Brisbane, 3AW Melbourne, 5AA Adelaide, 6PR Perth, CKNW Vancouver, Newstalk ZB New Zealand, South-East Radio Ireland, LBC London.
What is your Best on-air moment?
The bigger stories like the resignation of Charles Kennedy, the Buncefield oil blaze and the funeral of George Best were good to report live on.
What is your Worst on-air moment?
Telling the world that a female skeleton bobsleigher at the 2006 Winter Olympics was ten months pregnant wasn’t the greatest . . . she was in fact 10 weeks pregnant!
What would you like to do before your career ends?
Work as a foreign correspondent.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Make my daughter Saoirse laugh.
What advice would you give to anyone that would like to get into the broadcasting world?
Work your nuts off. The harder you work, the luckier you’ll get.
1997 BT Young Journalist of the Year (Yorkshire and the North-East).
A big thanks to Enda for taking part.
